When should I make a follow up phone call after e-mailing a resume?
I prefer to e-mail my resume to potential employers. I am always sure to include an appropriate cover letter. When I have the phone number of the contact as well, I like to make a follow up call. Should I call immediately after sending and introduce myself, then let the employer know that I sent my resume? If not, how long should I wait? I do not want to annoy anyone, but I live in a very tough job market (Michigan) and I need to stand out.

What is the non-profit job market like in December for Development Associates (event and database management)?
I have been working at a non-profit in Washington, DC for two years and am looking for a new job starting right after Thanksgiving. I’m also wondering how much a Development Associate normally gets paid as I’ve been an AmeriCorps*VISTA with a very small salary ($10K) for these two years. I have experience in databases, event planning, and managing volunteers.

What database software to learn to get a job?
Oracle, MS SQL Server (with Transact SQL), or some smaller vendor’s database such as mySQL? Or even MS Access?
Oracle has the largest market share and it runs on multi-platforms. MS SQL is limited to MS Windows even though there’s some movement to make it run on non-MS Windows platform. It’s also easier to learn than Oracle.
MS Access doesn’t seem to be a marketable skill, even though most of small databases are in Access at most companies.
What do you think is the best database software to get a job in database industry? I have field experience only with Access and Membership Plus.

What job title should I ask for?
I have a job offer in which I would be working 3 main functions, doing financial analysis, marketing database development and maintainence, and working on marketing and operations projects. I currently have an analyst title (marketing research analyst), and would rather have a title that indicates a promotion, as it is a pretty hefty salary increase. The company has indicated they are flexible with they title, which they have named Senior Business Analyst. (the senior part doesn’t do it for me in terms of showing what I would like to) I don’t know if they would go for an AVP title, but if they would, AVP of what? Marketing and Finance? They do not have an AVP in either role currently, though they have a number of AVP’s in other areas. They might be more apt to choose something in between Sr. Analyst and AVP. But what would that be? The position reports to the EVP/CFO and is under the Finance area. This is the banking industry. Thanks in advance!

How to achieve maximum billing highest productivity as a Single Recruiter?
My firm specialises in executive search and recruitments for the middle and senior management positions. We’re planning to add a branch office at a new location. To begin with it will have a single recuiter and depending upon how business goes, we will add more. My question is what should a single recruiter do to achieve maximum billing? What should be the overall strategy? How should he position himself in the market? Should a single recruiter do more middle positions (as there are numbers) or should he do more senior positions? or should he do both? Should he specialise in a single domain and make all his database specific to that domain or industry? or should do he do fresh research for the positions that he receives from the client side? We work on a lot of senior positions in multiple domains. In such cases, profiles are not available in the database and most of the time, we have to do fresh research specifically catering to the need of that position. The billings are decent being senior positions, but it takes time to close, the process is slow. After client has selected his choice of candidate, we are left with a pipeline of senior candidates that goes waste and we’re unable to use them. My question is how can a single recruiter achieve maximum billing, increase productivity and be able to place the maximum out of his database and his research. Should he focus on single domain or multiple domain, middle or senior levels, how many number of clients should he handle at a time? Please share your experience, views and observations. Thanks You Ajay Kukreja Out-Of-Box Consulting

I have several years of marketing experience.. I work close to NYC currently, but I love New York and am trying very hard to work there. I’ve tried basic job searching, but no luck as of yet… thought I’d give this a shot!
